Home ➤ Services ➤ Design and installation of intercom communication systems
An intercom system is a great addition to any property. It’ll allow you to communicate quickly with people in other rooms, make general announcements, or even play music throughout your building. It’s also a powerful security feature that allows you to talk to—and in some cases, see—visitors before you give them access to your property.
Of course, an intercom system can only provide all those lovely features if it’s installed correctly in the first place. Before you can get your new system up and running, here are a few things you need to know about intercom system installation.
1. Parts of an Intercom System
In order to properly install an intercom system, you need to know the different parts. Depending on the system you choose, there may be up to three different parts:
The intercom base station is the central hub of the entire system, from which you control all the other components. Since the base station is connected to every other device, it usually has the ability to broadcast messages throughout the entire system.
Intercom substation. Substations are essentially just speakers. They can broadcast messages from the base station, but do not have microphones for two-way communication. You will find them mostly in larger facilities such as schools, factories, train stations, and airports where general announcements can be made. Sometimes they are installed in homes to broadcast music throughout the area.
Intercom stations. These are the devices you usually think of when you think of an intercom system. These are the units where you press a button and talk to people in other units. They can be wall-mounted, tabletop units, or handsets, depending on the system you choose.
Many intercom systems do not come with all the parts. For example, many intercom systems only come with one or two intercom stations. Typically, one is mounted outside the front door and one is inside (or accessible via an app on your mobile device). They do not have a base station or substation.
Before you begin installing your intercom system, you will need to choose the parts that best suit your needs.
2. Intercom location is important.
As with real estate, installing an intercom system involves three things: location, location, location! Before you install the system, you will need to determine the best places to install the various parts.
The best location for your units will depend on three things:
The system you choose
Your property
How you plan to use the system
If you choose a simple system with just one or two units for security purposes, determining the location will be fairly easy. Place one unit at the outside entrance and one inside where someone can easily access it. In a home, this is usually right outside the front door. For businesses, this is usually at the front desk or security office.
If you choose a system that includes all three parts of the intercom system, determining the location will be a little more difficult. You will want to place the base station in a location where the person who regularly needs to make announcements can get to it. For example, in a school, the base station would likely be in the principal’s office.
Then you will need to determine where to install the stations and substations. The stations should be located in areas where you will need to communicate with people. For example, you would not install an intercom station in front of your store because you will not need to talk to customers. However, you would want to have one in your storage room or in individual offices so you can communicate with team members.
Before installing the intercom system, create a plan of where you want to install the different parts. If you have a plan, the installation process will go much more smoothly.
3. Always hire a professional to install the intercom system.
Regardless of your system or property, it is always best to hire a professional to install the intercom system. An intercom system is an important piece of security equipment, so it is important to ensure that it is installed correctly the first time, especially when undertaking complex installation jobs such as hardwired intercom systems.
A professional will not only ensure that everything is installed correctly, but will also help you configure the system to best suit your property and needs, as well as offer ongoing support if you have any issues in the future. Professional installation may cost a little more, but it is worth it for the added peace of mind and support that you will receive in the future.
Ensure the correct installation of the intercom system with four-wall protection
Installing an intercom system is not always an easy task. With so many elements to consider, it is easy to get confused. You want your intercom system to work for years to come, so make sure it's installed correctly the first time.
